Coastal Development in an Era of Sea Level Rise
- Where are the appropriate locations to “grow” in coastal communities? Which assets can stay put, and which areas should we avoid? Sea Level Rise is not necessarily incorporated into other hazard plans in Oregon’s coastal communities despite all indication that this is something we need to plan for. Meg Gardner and Julie Sepanik, Dept. of Land Conservation and Development, and Fran Recht, Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, will engage participants in a dialogue about the potential impacts of SLR to Oregon’s coastal communities. Andy Lanier, Dept. of Land Conservation and Development, will moderate the panel.
- Elise Granek and Amy Ehrhart, Portland State University, will lead an interactive discussion about coastal ecosystem services research, data needs, and networking among researchers, citizen scientists and coastal and marine decision makers. The goal of this session is to facilitate collaboration and initiate a long-term network for individuals to engage in future collaboration.
- Six “stations” will be set up around the room, allowing participants to “explore” the myriad of places and ways scientists and engaged citizens are monitoring changes in the marine environment.
- Station 1: Local, estuarine: Bree Yednock, South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve
- Station 2: Local, coastal waters: Lisa Phipps, Tillamook Estuaries Partnership
- Station 3: Statewide Coastal waters: Silke Bachuber and Heather Fulton-Bennett, Oregon State University
- Station 4: Statewide, Regional waters: Scott Marion, OR. Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
- Station 5: National Ocean Observing Systems: Craig Risien, Oregon State University;
- Station 6: Global ocean change: Caren Braby, OR Dept. of Fish and Wildlife
- The coast, like many rural places, is experiencing youth outmigration, small and underfunded education districts, and changes to existing and new industries. Tracy Crews and Renee O’Neill, Oregon State University, and a panel of local teachers and high school students will discuss the role of students, teachers, programs, workforce development, and innovative approaches to engage youth in marine science, industry, and issues in their communities.
2016 Marine Technology Summit - Agate Beach Inn October 10 and 11
Two groups of STEM students presented during poster sessions and attended the summit over two days. Their posters and a few pictures are below:
2016 National KidWind Competition New Orleans Convention Center May 21 - 26
Six Toledo STEM I and II students traveled with teachers Ben Ewing and Peter Lohonyay to New Orleans to compete in the National KidWind Challenge and attend the associated AWEA Windpower Conference. In addition, Zach Casberg, Jaydn Spangler, Darius King, Tristan Wilkison, Cody Kirkey, Logan Glenn, and their STEM teachers enjoyed New Orleans!
