Microsoft Excel Glider Data Analysis
STEM 1 students used Microsoft Excel to analyze about 5000 data points gathered by Oregon State University's Glider Bob during 2007. Below are the glider data files they started their exploration with examples of finished graphs.
Model Glider Building
Pairs of STEM 1 students were tasked with changing a plastic bottle into a glider that would travel to the bottom of our above-ground pool and back up on its own. The more trips vertically through the water column, the higher their grade would be! Students studied buoyancy concepts, sketched out designs, and started trying their ideas. Arc GIS Glider Map Building
For the final part of the glider project, STEM 1 students made maps of OSU Glider Jane's path while it was collecting data in the ocean. Students were introduced to ArcGIS, imported data from Microsoft Excel, then plotted the various layers of data into their map. Approximate depth, temperature, density, oxygen, and chlorophyll-a were all loaded into the maps so readers could see how as depth changed the other ocean measurements changed as Glider Jane traveled along its' path. Students then worked with the cartography features of ArcGIS to add titles, legends, north arrows, and scale bars to complete their maps. See a student example below!
